Pastisse de nato

The great thing about traveling with locals, is that they tell you all the local secrets (without you having to open tripadvisor or guide book)

So ... EVERYWHERE in Lisbon is bakery ... and the windows are lined with Pastie de Natos - which are these little cups of flaky pastry and inside is a delicious custard which has been baked in the oven! (Every bakery makes it slightly differently, and there are shops that only sell Pasties de Natos and coffee! - with cues outside)

After a delicious breakfast yesterday, we headed to this HUGE monastery, built in 16C ... the story goes that the nuns used to iron the priests shits and their clothes with egg whites, so they had a lot of egg yolks left over! So from the egg yolks they started making Pasties De nato ...

A few steps away from the monastery is the famous and original Place to get de nato. It is a 800 seater coffee shop - selling coffee, bad service and the de nato! Of course we went!

Delicious! (Although I'm more of a chocolate fan)

But the crispy pastry and smooth Centre are great!

Apparently you usually line up for over an hour to get de Nato from this place!
