So all over Malta (every second shop) sells these patizzes - there are the regular pie style dough ones, and then the crunchy puff pastry type ones (which my super healthy Maltese friend told me the other day are 500 calories for a little patizze) .. Hence the size of the average Maltese!
So my friend told me that you have to have a patizze from Chrystal palace in Rabat! It is one of the oldest and most traditional places!
So we were sort of in that area for an Easter carnival, and I promised Zaz we could go to Chrystal Palace.
So after asking a few people and following the bus driver on his quick smoke break - we arrived to find a door, old mean sitting outside smoking cigars, cigarettes, lots of tattoos!
We parked our pram and went inside to the tiny shop!
1 man behind the counter pouring tea into little glasses (reminded me of India) from a big tin tea pot, this big oven with the fire burning, and old men sitting around drinking tea and smoking!
We quickly ordered our patizze (thank goodness there is not much variety, it's either cheese or peas) and ran out of the shop.
Went and sat on the park bench and ate our very flakey and oily patizze! A perfect combo!
Zazas comments made the experience worthwhile ...
'I literally had to hold my breath and had no option but to walk straight through the cigarette smoke'
'There were so many of those people - what do you and Cassi call granny's friends? Oh yes, AK's'
'You can literally taste the calories'
Azi just ate her patizze!
Ps: I told Phil's Maltese work mate that I went to Chrystal palace - he doesn't believe that is the best patizze place - so we have to try his place next!
Watch out Sydney - Gia with crazy hair will be rolling in!
